description:
I’ve been working on a new project with my good friend and all round musical idol, Rob Clouth - the first track ‘Candeleda’ from our forthcoming EP ‘8 Billion Realities' is out today. ► Tour dates: https://www.maxcooper.net/event ► Subscribe to channel: @maxcoopermax ► Join Max’s newsletter and Discord https://maxcooper.os.fan/discord ► Listen to On Being: https://ffm.to/on_being_ ► Buy 12” Triple gatefold vinyl' ‘On Being': https://ffm.to/on_being_ Max Cooper: This track from the EP came from Rob’s time in Candeleda, developing his “cheatbox” system, where he creates whole real time electronic sets only from his voice and keys. Rob put forward a beautiful stumbling melodic sequence which we bounced back and forth adding harmonies and synth layers to round off a collection covering some of the breadth of music that we both love. I hope there’s something in there which you enjoy - there is more on the way from the project very soon. The track has a certain lulling hypnosis and I was interested in how we could achieve the same effect visually, so I got in touch with an artist I discovered through our Mesh discord, Brandon Eversole, who creates warping space systems, and who fully pulled the brain mangle out of the bag on the project. I love the loss of orientation he creates with the transitions between noise and structure. Rob Clouth: Two years ago, while preparing for a Sonar show, I needed to escape the city and focus intensely on the project. A friend of mine has a house in the beautiful countryside near a town called Candeleda, about two hours from Madrid, so I went there for a couple of weeks to work. It was an interesting and somewhat intense time. I was alone almost the whole way through. It was February, ice cold, with occasional intense downpours, but the place was incredibly cosy. A small, charming house with a wood burner, perfect for hiding away. The sheep would come up to say hi in the mornings. The main melody of Candeleda came out of that period. I felt creative, productive, in awe of the beautiful surroundings, and I guess a little lonely. All of those feelings bled into the music and shaped that composition. When it came time to produce the final track, I took that melody and chopped it up. That essentially formed the base of the song, then Max and I continued to build on top of that and now it's a very different beast - but listening to it still reminds me of those strange days. Brandon Eversole: This project began with a short clip of mine that Max connected with. From there our dialogue shaped it into the full-length piece you see here. The visuals blur time and form — moments that don’t settle, that seem to exist in more than one place at once. It’s a kind of nowness that feels chaotic on the surface but, with the right care, reveals something calming and strangely beautiful. Like quantum foam, it flickers at the edge of perception, shifting between noise and structure, leaving you to wonder what was really there. My process is a way of sculpting with time. I treat video as a volume that can be carved and reshaped, filled with collections of images I’m constantly creating and curating. I play these volumes live with the music, working in broad improvisations and then refining through smaller tweaks. That balance of chaos and care is what brings the piece to life.
