Creating my latest album On Being was like finding a secret window into our collective psyche, and discovering amongst the chaos, pleasure and pain, so many experiences that we share at different times of our lives, and an overwhelming sense of emotions and connections that I had to explore. This track came from a quote that was so poignant I felt I had to remove some of it for the track title. The full quote being “I yearn for a child. I didn’t know how, or if I even should try to represent it musically. I was also also interested in the weight of bias it carries, given the sex of the author is ambiguous. Like many of the quotes with such emotive power, I let it sit as I tested musical ideas and tried to find connections. In this instance it needed to be a purely felt connection, I didn’t want to move away from the feeling of the quote with any technical processes like some of the other projects. Some time later, I arranged to meet with Tom VR for a studio session. I chatted to Tom about the album project and some of the quotes, and the idea of finding musical representations. Then something strange happened which I’ve never seen before. We switched on a collection of synths, and I set my favourite patches and signal paths and prepared everything for a jamming session. Tom went to the Trigon6 and touched the keys, and the absolute first keys he touched; are the beginning of this piece of music. We played for hours and tried many things, but that first fortuitous lightning strike captured something with a deep resonance and felt to fit. I tried to keep the rest of the piece as subtle and honest as I could, which again, felt the only way to approach such a delicate human experience we were trying to represent. Hayk Zakoyan took this music and idea and completed the story with his beautiful touch designer models reminiscent of dynamic cellular systems. The idea being to present something of ourselves and of nature in a way we can get lost in as a means to move forwards from what is a tough place the quote came from. The point is, this is all supposed to be of some help. The music and visual is built to soothe and provide space away from the everyday. Hayk Zakoyan: This visual work for Max Cooper's 'Mother Nature' is a real-time audiovisual exploration generated by Armenian new media artist Hayk Zakoyan. It delves into the intricate relationship between humanity, the natural world, and the often-unseen microscopic realms that underpin existence. The visuals are rendered entirely live, driven by a synthesis of custom-built algorithms and artificial intelligence. Sophisticated audio analysis algorithms interpret the nuances of Max Cooper's track in real-time – its frequencies, dynamics, and textures directly inform the visual output. This creates an inseparable symbiosis between sound and image, where the music actively cultivates the unfolding visual forms. Employing techniques from visual programming and generative art, the system simulates organic processes and emergent complexity. The visual language evokes microscopic life, cellular structures, or fungal networks, constantly evolving and responding to the sonic landscape. It aims to represent a digital interpretation of natural growth, interaction, and transformation, visualizing the idea that 'Mother Nature Must Have A Different Plan' by showcasing the beauty and complexity found in its fundamental, often invisible, processes.
